Fifteen year old Chloe Duncan finally has her Prince Charming and life could not be more perfect. But after she meets a mysterious boy and has the first of what become increasingly haunting dreams of the ocean, her story-book romance quickly unravels. Fate sweeps her across the world to France, and it is there, at an enchanting castle by the sea, that she learns about Camille Deveraux. As Chloe uncovers the secrets of the real Sleeping Beauty, she begins to realize that the infamous curse was not broken by true love's kiss and still threatens her own happily ever after.

I wanted to give this book another star, but the errors and pacing made me stop too many times. I enjoy modern twists on fairy tales, and really wanted to like this one. The idea is fun and had a lot of potential.

Issues with the story included improper use of apostrophes (one such error can be forgiven, but multiple uses of Duncan's had me gritting my teeth); lack of research regarding the Orient vs Asia and terminology for the time period; mention of Captain Morgan (while a notorious pirate during the time in question, the odds of him being used in casual conversation is questionable--especially considering that not all countries considered him a "pirate" and his area of travel was far removed from Brittany); loosing/loose is not the same as losing/lose; and lack of motivation for the characters and slow (and questionable) plot development.

I was disappointed to never really get a sense of character motivation for the antagonist or the protagonists. Instead, the characters felt one dimensional and a bit reliant on clichés or convenience to move the story along. What made Evan change his mind and decide to date Chloe after so many years, and why would he even care that after so much "neglect" that someone else was interested? Does the family always take random convenient trips? What motivation did the "witch" have and why would she care after hundreds of years? (What did she stand to gain/lose with her actions and why?) Why would Logan and Chloe not care that some "thing" was "making" them fall in love (or stay apart), and neither of them actually had a choice in the matter? Yes, love can be an amazing and powerful thing, but mindless love (especially in stories geared toward young impressionable females) is deeply concerning. On that note, I was surprised and disheartened to see that smoking, sex, and drinking were painted favorably for kids under 18, with minimal concerns for protection or safety. I do understand that sex (and drinking and smoking) has been around a long time, and kids will indulge, but I was shocked to see it being endorsed for a 15 year old (especially because I know too many girls--and, yes, they are still girls no matter how old they think they are--who have gotten pregnant that young and have struggled or are still struggling with how that decision has impacted their lives). Also, the story felt more "explainy" than necessary in other areas that could have used a firm editing hand to get to the action of the story, and the continual flashbacks then delving into the past then coming back made for a long read that could have been tightened to create more tension to make the story line less predictable and one dimensional.

When I read, I want to drop into a story. I like being swept away and immersed into the author's world that has been created for the reader. However, while the idea behind this was good, the issues kept jerking me back to the surface and keeping me from fully enjoying what was happening. I do think that with some smoothing and editing, attention to detail/research to make the story feel more authentic, and developing more rounded characters, this story could be more solid.

Dreaming of Beauty Kristen White 9781466263062 Books Reviews

I enjoyed the book immensely! The characters were interesting and well developed. The parallel stories were excellent. I was actually reading this great book on the beach at the Jersey Shore, which made it so much more captivating.
Can't wait for Kristen's next book!
Great book! But "lose" and "loose" are 2 different words with different definitions, and I think the author forgot about that.
I read this book in less than 24 hours; I just couldn't put it down...I became obsessed early on in the book; in the beginning the detailed writing reminded me of Anne Rice's writing, although its definately not a vampire book- but its certainly a love story that transcends time and age. The passion I felt reading it-MY GOD! Anyone who's had young love, been through high school, and/or loves reading love stories and thrillers, will certainly fall head over heels into this book the way i did.....Sweet Dreams! D
This book is sweet, enchanting, and heart warming. I bought this book out of curiousity and based on other's reviews. I couldn't put it down and finished it in less than a week. The writing is smooth and you don't feel like you have to finish it in one night, you can enjoy it without the story going too fast. If you want a book with true love, magic, and time paradoxes this is the book for you. I myself will read it over and over again.
I enjoyed this book quite a lot, it was a nice unexpected twist of one of the classic fairytales we girls live for as young kids, I found minimal errors and expect to see more on the other fairytales. Kristen is in great league with Chanda Hann and "UnEnchanted". Definitely for young adults since it insinuates sex, teenage drinking, and some unapproved conducts, since we as us did but hey I don't want to give kids today anymore ideas to get in trouble. But I enjoyed it a lot.
I usually enjoy fairy tale retelling or modern day versions of fairy tales. I love to see something classic and everlasting be retold or re-imagined in new and inventive way. Unfortunately for me Dreaming of Beauty by Kristen White fell flat, and disappointed me.

Chloe is 15 and has the seemingly perfect life. She is a good daughter that hardly gets into any trouble, as a great group of friends, and has the perfect prince charming boyfriend named Evan. All of that is thought to be true until Logan, the new boy in school, enters Chloe's life and then everything she thought she new is shattered. Chloe starts to get agonizing head aches, sees read spots in her vision, and hears piercing sounds when ever she is around Logan. Her emotions are getting out of check and she can't decide if she wants her perfect boyfriend Evan or the dark mysterious semi stalker Logan. All she can hope is that she can find her happily ever after.

I really wanted to like this book, I truly did but unfortunately I found myself just wishing it would end. I'll start with what I did like about Dreaming of Beauty. I like the idea behind this story. Kristen White takes the well known tale of Sleeping Beauty and attempts to give it an alternate ending and therefore she can weave her tale and have it make sense in her timeline. Although it did not execute smoothly, the idea behind the story was very intriguing and ultimately it is what kept me reading even when I wanted to abandon the story.

So onto what I disliked about the book. My first major dislike was the pacing; the book never felt like it found its footing. The story felt rushed, and under worked. I never lost myself in the story because I continually had to stop and think just to figure out what was going on. Also the book was split into three parts, and while normally I do not mind this with Dream of Beauty each part felt like it was a brand new story and we were starting all over again. Everything felt off, and the main part of the story felt convoluted and rushed with only a dream sequence to make the story come together.
My next major point of disappointment was the characters; they never developed and were one dimensional. I like to feel for the characters when I read a book; I want to be able to visualize them, and feel like they could be live and breathe. With Chloe and her two love interests I never felt for them, I got glimpses of there development but I think with the pacing and organization of the book I never happened. The whole book they never felt like anything other than people on the page.

Dreaming of Beauty was unfortunately did not work for me, I had to force my self to finish. I am firm believer that although I did not enjoy it does not mean that someone else may not love it; it's the joy of reading. I just want to inform people of my opinion, give a little incite and maybe save someone from picking up a book they may not truly end up enjoying.
