This is actually the second copy I have bought of this work (this second copy was thanks for a friend who had done me an enormous good turn recently in Pennsylvania). Henry Adams, John Adams' great-grandson, is considered by many the first "scientific" historian, in that he returned to primary sources for his analyses of Mr. Gallatin and his efforts, unlike his predecessors who, in the main, relied on secondary or other resources. As a result, he quotes letters at length and draws his conclusions from these and other similar sources for his work. It is, however, a bit on the "dry" side for modern tastes, whereby the four as opposed to five stars. It also tends to lack a good deal of the non-official background; as fascinating as the material is for his official duties (which were many, arduous, and lengthy), one would have liked perhaps a little more of the personal in the story. Nonetheless, this is a magisterial effort, and this little-known but important figure of the early American Republic receives his due and then some from Mr. Adams.
